Jean Prat was the brother of Louis Prat, the first doctor in New Orleans, from whom Jean took over in 1735. He corresponded regularly with Jussieu, to whom he sent herbaria, plants and reports. His rival in Louisiana, particularly concerning the observation and use of the bayberry tree, was Alexandre Vielle, the pharmacist.
