| The son of a lawyer in Dieppe, Adrien de Pauger entered the military, while his brother became a painter. As a young engineer, de Pauger gained the confidence of the Indies Company, and sailed for Louisiana at the head of a carefully selected group of workmen. He built Fort Balise at the mouth of the Mississippi and drew up the town plan for New Orleans. |
